Everyone has had to cope with a stressful event over their lifetime, and each day every person is bombarded with images, sounds and details that can sometimes overwhelm you. The level of stress that is manageable varies from person to person, depending on their everyday lifestyle and how they have been bought up as a child. But when it comes to coping with an event that is impacting on your everyday routine, many people have no idea how to handle the problem sufficiently.
Coping with a stressful event can impact greatly on a person's mental and physical health:
depression
lack of sleep
loss of concentration
unable to compete well in physical activities
constant anger
Someone having to Cope with a stressful event can also impact greatly on the environment around them:
getting angry at the people around them
an angry or violent air about them
pushing friends away
having a dirty and untidy living space
not caring about the way they look
Some of the actions or strategies you can take to cope with the stress:
leaving enough time for musical or artistic relaxation time ( to calm down)
getting enough sleep
thinking about the stress topic from a different point of view
talking to close friends about the stressful situation
talking to a professional about the situation.
meditation. relax you mind and forget your troubles.
exercise. Exercising helps to control your thought pattern better and get rid of the hormones in your body that are the result of stress.
avoid topics of conversation that get on your nerves. For example if your having family problems, try not to have a conversation with someone about family.
focus on the positive side of the stressful situations your placed in.
Write in a Diary of some kind, because if you aren't able to talk to anyone else about your stressful situation the next best thing is talking to yourself.
The various levels of support offered to someone going through stress can be individual, communal and with the government. Three examples of the type of stressful event and the support that can be offered to are:
Being sexually harassed:
Individual-Councillors
Communal- Awareness programs.
Government- The illegality of it.
Parents getting divorced
Individual- Councillors
Communal- Schools teach students about divorce at school.
Government- government gets involved with the exchange of money and which parent pays what to give their children education.
Being forced to leave the country you've grown up in.
Individual- Councillors
Communal- Internet websites can be used to communicate to peers across the world.
Government- Jobs can be done on the computer and so the job your parents have wouldn't be lost.
Kids Helpline is an organisation made to help people from the age of 5-25 deal with the stress in their lives by talking to a councillor that they are able to call over kids help line.
